AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Augusta State shot 56 percent in the second half Tuesday
night and pulled away for an 82-62 Peach Belt Conference victory
over Clayton State in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the Jaguars -- who earlier in the day moved up to
No. 3 in the nation -- improved to 8-0 on the season and matched
the best start in program history, first set during the 1965-66
season. The win extended ASU's home winning streak to 18
straight overall and to 15 straight at home in the regular
season.
Seniors Ben Madgen and Alex Smith tallied season highs in scoring.
Madgen registered his second career double-double with 26 points,
11 rebounds and three steals while Smith went 7-of-7 from the field
for 19 points and added nine rebounds. Senior point guard Daniel
Dixon chipped in 11 points and a season-best six assists.
Brandon Robinson led the Lakers (4-3, 1-1 PBC) with 21 points,
including four 3-pointers, while Robert Murry netted 18 points and
Timothy Downs pitched in 10 points and four steals.
The Jags (8-0, 2-0 PBC) shot 50 percent in the game and
outrebounded CSU 42-27. The Jags led by as many as 23 in a contest
that featured six ties and a pair of lead changes.
Ahead just 39-36 at the break, ASU connected on nine of its first
12 shots to open the second half on a 22-7 run and take a
commanding 61-43 lead with 10:42 to play. The Lakers never got
closer than 16 the rest of the way.
The Jags host Emmanuel in a non-conference contest on Saturday,
Dec. 19 at 2:00 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
