AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State shot 67 percent
in the first half Saturday night and cruised to an 87-58 Homecoming
victory over North Georgia in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
The victory improved No. 6 ASU to 21-4 overall and to 15-3 in the
Peach Belt Conference. The win extended the Jaguars' winning
streak to a season-high seven straight games and extended their PBC
home winning streak to 14 in a row, dating back to last season.
The Jags remained in a tie with USC Aiken atop the PBC standings.
The 14th-ranked Pacers downed Columbus State 82-68 in Columbus,
Ga.
ASU junior forward Fred Brathwaite scored a game-high 23 points and
grabbed seven rebounds. Junior guard Ben Madgen, the Peach Belt
Conference's leading scorer, managed 18 points and passed
former Jaguar standout Derek Stewart for 11th place on the
conference's career scoring list with 1,492 career
points.
Senior Garret Siler garnered 14 points and seven blocks, one off
his career high. Senior point guard Steve Smith registered season
highs in points (10) and assists (7) and junior forward Greg Hire
pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and added four assists and
three steals. LaBrian Lyons paced North Georgia (14-11, 9-10) with
17 points and Michael Moynihan chipped in 10.
ASU shot 59.6 percent for the game and outscored the Saints 38-16
in the paint. The Jags outscored NGCSU 25-5 over the final 7:35 of
the first half to open up a 41-26 halftime lead. ASU opened the
second half on a 14-1 run and led by as much as 33 with 3:59
remaining.
The Jags host Columbus State for Senior Night on Wednesday, Feb. 25
at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
