SAVANNAH, Ga.
– The 11th-ranked Clayton State Lady Lakers advanced to the
2009 NCAA Southeast Region final with a 5-1 victory over No. 19
Augusta State on Friday afternoon at the AASU Tennis Complex in
Savannah.
Clayton State (11-6) will now face host Armstrong Atlantic State at
10:00 a.m. on Saturday to determine which team advances to the 2009
NCAA National Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May
13-16. The matchup is a rematch of last year's Mid-Atlantic Region
final, won by AASU, 5-0. Augusta State ended its season at 13-8
after making its seventh NCAA Championships appearance.
The Lady Lakers won two of three doubles matches, then picked up
three straight-set singles wins to clinch the match. ASU earned its
doubles point as Marina Ferreira and Bianca Machado blanked Evelin
Csizi and Veronika Jasenovcova, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles. CSU's Marie
Cercelletti and Selma Hidass then defeated Camila Correa and
Giovana Fenstersifer, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. Ninth-ranked Viktoriya
Semyrodenko and Katie White beat Fernanda Chiaparini and Nathalia
Rodrigues, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles to give Clayton State the edge
heading into singles.
Clayton State won four of the six first sets, then clinched the
match behind Csizi, a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Correa at No. 4 singles;
Semyrodenko, a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Chiaparini at No. 2 singles and
Hidass, who clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Machado at
No. 4 singles.
