AUGUSTA, Ga.
– Junior guard Caleb Brown scored a season-high 18 points
Wednesday night to lead No. 6 Augusta State to an 89-43 Peach Belt
Conference victory over UNC Pembroke in Christenberry
Fieldhouse.
One of five Jaguars in double figures, Brown connected on 6-of-9
field-goal attempts and drained 3-of-5 3-point attempts to go along
with six rebounds. He logged a team-high 26 minutes of playing
time.
Alex Smith netted 16 points, Ben Madgen pitched in 14, Fred
Brathwaite managed 13 and Daniel Dixon registered 11 points, five
steals and four assists. Brathwaite and Greg Hire grabbed a
game-high seven rebounds each. Junior forward Howard Brown chipped
in eight points and four rebounds in a season-high 12 minutes off
the bench.
The victory -- the Jags' 23rd straight at home and 14th in a
row in league play -- lifted them to 15-1 overall and to 7-0 in the
conference. The Braves (5-12, 1-7 PBC) did not have a player reach
double digits.
ASU's margin of victory (46) was the largest since a 115-47
victory (68) over Carver on Nov. 21, 2004, a span of 172 games. The
43 points allowed were the fewest surrendered by a Jags'
squad since a 67-40 victory at UNC Pembroke on Feb. 16, 2005.
The defeat was UNCP's largest since falling 103-56 to ASU on
Jan. 18, 2003.
ASU led 39-20 at the half and shot a season-best 69.2 percent in
the second half. The Jags' 14 steals marked a season high, as
did their 34 bench points.
ASU travels to USC Aiken on Monday, January 25 for a 7:30 p.m.,
league matchup with the Pacers in the Convocation Center.
