DAHLONEGA, Ga.
– Augusta State rallied from a 19-point, second-half deficit
Monday night to force overtime before falling 71-64 to North
Georgia in Peach Belt Conference action at Memorial Hall.
The contest marked the league opener for the Lady Saints, who
improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the PBC. The loss was the eighth
straight for the Lady Jaguars, who dropped to 1-11 overall and 0-3
in the league.
ASU junior forward Briyana Evans tallied a career-high 18 points,
eight rebounds and four steals. Junior reserve forward Stacey
Lampkin booked 13 points -- one off her career high -- and grabbed
nine rebounds and recorded three blocks.
The Lady Jags trailed by as much as 19 on two occasions and were
down 18 with 10:38 remaining. A pair of 6-0 spurts got ASU within
56-48 with 5:52 to play and following a North Georgia basket, the
Lady Jags rattled off nine straight points to close within one of
the lead at 56-55 with 3:13 left.
Ali Cline broke a 5:05 NGCSU scoreless drought with a jumper before
senior point guard Eboni Davis drained her second 3-pointer of the
game with 2:24 left to pull the Lady Jags even at 58-all. After a
pair of Lady Saints' misses, Evans gave ASU a 60-58 lead with
a driving layup at the 1:38 mark. Sarah Stinson answered with a
pair of free throws 46 seconds later to force a 60-all tie. After
the teams traded misses, Davis' desperation heave at the
buzzer was well short, forcing overtime.
The Lady Saints, who outscored ASU 11-4 in the extra frame, got a
game-high 19 points from Janyce Ealey while Sarah Stinson and
Meredith Montgomery netted 12 points each.
The Lady Jags shot 33 percent in the first half, but trailed only
10-8 after a Kirsten Stallings layup at the 11:01 mark. The Lady
Saints responded with an 11-2 spurt, outscoring ASU 15-6 in the
final 6:12 to move out to a 36-22 halftime lead.
ASU hosts Peach Belt Conference newcomer Flagler College on
Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
