ST.AUGUSTINE, Fla.
- Augusta State shot 64 percent in the second half and the
No. 5 Jaguars posted an 85-62 Peach Belt Conference victory over
Flagler Wednesday night in their first visit to Flagler Gym.
The victory lifted ASU to 23-2 overall and to 15-1 in conference
play and extended the Jags' winning streak to eight in row.
Flagler dropped to 9-15 and 4-11, respectively.
ASU senior guard Ben Madgen matched his season high with 28 points
and senior guard/forward Fred Brathwaite booked his sixth
double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Senior
forward Alex Smith managed 12 points in only 16 minutes. Daniel
Dixon and Greg Hire handed out six assists each as the Jags posted
22 assists as a team, their second-most of the season.
Eddie Fowler pitched in a team-best 15 points for the Saints and
Chad July added a11.
In a back-and-forth first half that featured four ties and 15 lead
changes, neither team led by more than two over the first 15:00. A
John Pietkiewicz 3-pointer gave Flagler its last lead with 5:21 to
play.
The Jags answered, as Caleb Brown canned a jumper and then buried a
trey on consecutive possessions to spark a 16-6 run over the final
5:15 to close out the half and give ASU a 39-30 advantage at the
break. ASU extended its lead to 14 in the first 4:59 of the second
half and the Saints got no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
The Jags head to Florence, S.C., on Saturday, Feb. 20 to take on
Francis Marion at 3:30 p.m., for Homecoming in Smith University
Center. The Patriots (18-6, 10-5) got past Lander 55-51 Wednesday
night.
