AUGUSTA, Ga. -
Augusta State shot 58 percent in the second half Saturday and
celebrated Senior Night in style with an 82-55 Peach Belt
Conference victory over Lander in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the No. 3 Jaguars wrapped up the regular season
with a 25-2 overall record and a 17-1 mark in conference play. The
Bearcats, in their first season under head coach Jeff Burkhamer,
closed out their season at 11-16 overall and 5-13 in the
league.
With the win -- their eighth straight in the series with Lander --
the Jags established a new school record for regular-season
victories. The previous mark of 24 was originally set by the
1969-70 squad under former head coach Marvin Vanover.
ASU shot 50 percent for the game and improved to 25-1 in the month
of February over the last three seasons. The victory also gave the
Jags 17 conference wins for the third year in a row. Over that
span, they are 51-7 in the league.
"We came out with emotion on the floor," said ASU head
coach Dip Metress, who has guided the Jags to their third straight
season of 25 or more wins. "It always happens on Senior Night
and tonight we honored five of our guys. It's a great honor
and testament to our seniors to remain undefeated at home and to
have a regular season like this."
ASU extended its current winning streak to 10 in a row. The Jags
stretched their streak of consecutive home victories to 27,
including 24 straight in the regular season.
Prior to tipoff, ASU honored its five senior starters -- Fred
Brathwaite, Daniel Dixon, Greg Hire, Ben Madgen and Alex Smith --
who have been responsible for a 106-21 record the last four
seasons. Smith paced the Jags with 21 points, while sophomore guard
Tye Beal registered a new career high with 13 points. Hire booked
his third doublefigure game of the season with 11 points.
Brathwaite grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Dixon tallied five
assists and a pair of steals.
Dane Sparrow booked a game-high 22 points and Da'Shon Barrino
chipped in 11 points off the Bearcat bench.
The Jags host Armstrong Atlantic State on Wednesday, March 3 in the
quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball
Championship. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m., in Christenberry
Fieldhouse.
