– Augusta State used a 20-2 run midway through the first half
Saturday to pull away from Lander and post an 81-54 Peach Belt
Conference road win at Finis Horne Arena.
Senior Ben Madgen scored a game-high 17 points while Fred
Brathwaite and Franck Ndongo tallied 11 points each. Alex Smith,
Greg Hire and Tye Beal all netted nine points. Junior Howard Brown
grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and Daniel Dixon handed our four
assists.
The victory -- the Jags' fourth in a row and seventh straight in
the series with Lander -- lifted them to 19-2 on the season and
11-1 in the PBC. The loss dropped the Bearcats to 8-12 and 3-9,
respectively.
ASU, ranked 12th nationally and first in the Southeast Region
poll, posted its 100th win since the beginning of the 2006-07
season and improved to 59-9 in conference play over that same
span.
Dane Sparrow came off the bench to lead Lander with 16 points and
Da'Shon Barrino chipped in 12.
The Jags shot 52 percent from the field, including 61 percent in
the first half. Seven different players connected on 3-pointers for
ASU.
The Jags, who racked up 32 bench points, limited the Bearcats to
just 33.3 percent shooting in the game.
ASU returns to action on Monday, Feb. 8, traveling to UNC Pembroke
to face the Braves in 7:30 p.m., PBC contest at the English E.
Jones Center.
