ASU Drops Tight PBC Battle

FLORENCE, S.C. – A clutch rally by Francis Marion in the final minute gave the Patriots a 62-61 win over Augusta State in the Jaguars' Peach Belt Conference opener Saturday afternoon.

Tye Beal's jumper with a minute to go put the Jaguars up 61-57; FMU's Marcus Wright answered with a 3-pointer just 20 seconds later to trim the lead to one.

As ASU tried to melt the clock late, Beal was fouled with 12 seconds remaining, but missed both free throws, and Harold Doby fouled the Patriots' Liki Turner on the ensuing rebound to send Turner to the line.

He made both, and two shots in the closing seconds missed for ASU, which fall to 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the PBC. Francis Marion improves to 5-3 overall, 1-1 in the PBC.

Beal led all scorers with 18 points, going 6-of-13 from the floor and chipping in four rebounds. O'Neal Armstrong added 14, including four 3-pointers to go with five assists, and Devonte Thomas chimed in with 11 for the Jags.

ASU shot 36.4 percent on 20-of-55 shooting, making 30 percent of their threes (7-of-23) and going 14-of-25 at the free throw line (56 percent).

Francis Marion made 22 of 39 shots (56.4 percent), including 5-of-11 from deep (45.5 percent) and 13-of-17 from the charity stripe.

Augusta State breaks for final exams before returning to the court Saturday, Dec. 10 in a non-conference matchup with King College in Bristol, Tennessee at 7:00 p.m.
