AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta State men's tennis squad jumped out to an early lead over Flagler and edged the Saints 5-4 Saturday in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Championships at Newman Tennis Center.
With the victory, the No. 7-seeded Jaguars advance to take on top-seeded Armstrong Atlantic State Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the championship match.
The 20th-ranked Jaguars claimed all three doubles matches to jump out to a 3-0 lead over the No. 12 Saints. ASU's 13th-ranked doubles team of Henrique Botuaro and Bernardo Fernandes claimed an 8-5 win. Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes won a tight match 9-8, claiming the tiebreaker 7-2. Maxime Columbe and Jenner Stevenson posted an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles for the Jags.
Victories at No. 4 and No. 5 singles proved to be the difference for the Jags. Guimaraes posted a straight sets win (6-4, 6-4) and Jan Labas won the decisive third set 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
