Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Paced by an 18-point effort from senior transfer Taylor Ayers in the first half, Augusta State claimed its third straight win to start the season with an 83-37 victory over Claflin Tuesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the Lady Jaguars improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The 46-point margin of victory marked the most lopsided win since a 49-point victory over Georgia Southwestern on Dec. 1, 2008.
Ayers led all scorers with 20 points and notched her second straight, 20-point performance of the young season, while pulling down a game-high seven rebounds. Juniors Jemimah Ashby and Brooke McCants each booked 10 points. Of the 13 Lady Jags who dressed for the game, 12 found the scoring column.
The Lady Panthers were led by Tylesha Brown's 11 points and a game-high 10 steals.
After an initial bucket by the Lady Panthers, ASU went on an 11-2 run to set the tone for the game. Ayers' presence in the paint helped the Lady Jags build as much as a 30-point lead. Ayers booked 18 points on 8-10 shooting in the first period. ASU shot 63.6 percent (21-of-33) in the half while holding Claflin to 27.6 percent (8-of-29) en route to 47-18 halftime lead.
"Taylor had a great game," ASU head coach Nate Teymer said. "No one out there could match her physically. Her presence in the middle helped to open up things from the outside."
ASU started the second half with a 13-2 run, taking advantage of five Claflin turnovers, to increase their lead to 40 points and empty the bench. The Lady Jags had a 15-5 run to end the game, including 3-pointers by junior Jac' Weathers and sophomore Marianne Davignon off the bench.
The Lady Jags dominated the boards, pulling down 52 rebounds compared to 29 for Claflin, while shooting 46 percent for the game and holding the Lady Panthers to 30 percent (15-50). ASU forced 30 turnovers, but committed 22 of their own. Augusta State canned six 3-pointers in the game, while Claflin went 0-11 from behind the arc.
