AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 13-ranked Augusta State men's tennis team took down No. 12 Flagler in Peach Belt Conference action Sunday at Newman Tennis Center by winning several tight matches.
ASU improved to 6-2 overall, and 1-1 in the PBC. Flagler fell to 4-3, 1-1.
Bernardo Fernandes outlasted Peter Coulis at the top singles spot, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), while Henrique Botuaro also went the full three sets for a win at No. 2 singles.
Fernandes and Botuaro scored an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes won the No. 2 doubles point 7-1 in a tiebreak, while Jenner Stevenson and Maxime Coulomb combined to pull out a 10-8 tiebreak win of their own at the number three slot.
ASU cruised to straight-set victories at the Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles positions; Flagler took No. 6 singles for the lone point on the day.
On the women's side, No. 13 Flagler (2-3 overall, 2-3 PBC) took two of the first three doubles points and won the Nos. 2-5 singles slots for the conference win over Augusta State (3-4, 0-2).
Marina Ferreria notched a win at No. 1 singles in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Veronica Figueroa for the Lady Jags, while Julie Fontaine scored a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles.
Lissa Murakami and Liv Pettersson combined for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Jaguar men return to the court Tuesday, February 28 at Lynn in non-conference action, while the women head to Montevallo Friday, March 2 in PBC play.
