Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- GRU Augusta outscored Shaw 23-12 over the final 9:10 and registered a 74-69 non-conference road win Saturday afternoon in Spaulding Gymnasium.
Senior forward Harold Doby booked a career-high 28 points -- 17 in the second half -- and Ryan Weems drained a pair of key 3-pointers as the Jaguars rallied from a six-point deficit. Juniors Devon Wright-Nelson and Roman Hill netted eight and six points, respectively, while Doby grabbed eight rebounds.
With the victory, the Jags improved to 3-1 on the season and to 15-5 all-time under head coach Dip Metress against teams from the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).
Curtis Hines scored 27 points and connected on six 3-pointers to pace the Bears, who got 20 points eight boards from Andre Paulk.
After a first half that featured eight ties and nine lead changes, Shaw stayed in front for span of nearly 10 minutes before the Jags made their move. A Doby free throw forced a 46-all tie with 12:17 left. The Bears pushed their lead back to six on Hines' final trey of the game at the 9:10 mark and led 60-55 following a Hines' jumper with 6:38 to play.
With the Bears sagging defensively into a 2-3 zone, Weems canned back-to-back treys from the left wing to put GRU in front 61-60 with 5:33 left. Doby got free inside for a dunk and a Weems' layup and two free throws from KJ Sherrill gave the Jags a 69-65 lead at the 2:40 mark. After a dunk from Shaw's Koron Reed, Doby snagged an offensive rebound and his 3-point play gave GRU a 71-67 advantage at the 1:55 mark.
Following a Bears' turnover, Doby punctuated the win with a monster dunk off a feed from Weems with :53 remaining.
The Jags, who shot 46.9 percent for the game, went 24-of-39 at the charity stripe and edged Shaw on the boards, 35-34.
The Jags are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 when they travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on Benedict at 7:30 p.m. GRU returns home to host Paine on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
