Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- GRU Augusta registered a 60-56 Peach Belt Conference road win over 10th-ranked Montevallo Tuesday night in Trustmark Arena, knocking the Falcons from the ranks of the undefeated.
With the victory, the Jaguars improved to 8-2 on the season and to 2-0 in the PBC. With the loss, Montevallo dropped to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. The win was the fifth straight for the Jags, who also improved to 24-11 vs. nationally-ranked opponents under head coach Dip Metress.
Senior guard Ryan Weems paced the Jags with 24 points -- 17 in the first half -- and drained four 3-pointers. Senior forward KJ Sherrill tallied 18 points and junior forward Henry McCarthy had six points and a team-best seven rebounds off the bench.
GRU Augusta led 35-22 at the half and stretched its advantage to as much as 18 midway through the second half before the Falcons caught fire.The Jags led 53-37 after a pair of Devon Wright-Nelson free throws at the 6:38 mark before Montevallo caught fire, rattling off a 15-0 run in a span of 4:15. The Falcons cut their deficit to 53-52 after a Troran Brown trey with 1:24 left.
Weems, Sherrill and D'Angelo Boyce combined for six free throws in the final 1:16 of the contest to thwart the Falcon rally.
The 56 points marked the second straight game the Jags set a season low in points allowed. Montevallo's 22 first-half points also marked a season low for a GRU opponent.
The Jags close out their pre-holiday schedule when they return home to host Mount Olive in a non-conference contest on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 4:00 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse. At halftime, GRU Athletics will honor Aquinas High School's football team in a special ceremony recognizing the Fighting Irish for winning their first-ever Class A State Championship last weekend in the Georgia Dome.
