Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. - Columbus State held off the Jaguars in the final four minutes of the Peach Belt Conference game in Christenberry Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon to keep a 75-62 score for the victory.
GRU (9-13, 5-10) freshman Tavia Sykes made her first 3-point attempt of the game to give the Jags a 5-0 start over the Cougars. Two straight GRU turnovers gave CSU (16-5, 11-4) the ball to tie the game, but Jags senior Dericka Griffis made two free throws to keep the home team on top. After the Jaguars forced one of CSU's 15 first-half turnovers, Sykes made her second trey.
The Jaguars committed 11 turnovers themselves in the first half to let CSU sneak into a one-point game midway through the first. Another three ball and mid-lane bucket from Sykes gave the Jags some breathing room as they took a 34-27 first-half lead. Sykes had 13 points at the break with two assists and two steals, while the Jags notched 15 points of Cougar turnovers.
CSU went on a 7-0 run to open the second off three GRU turnovers. With the game tied at 38-all, Chatil Bradford went coast-to-coast to give CSU its first lead of the day, but Sykes kept her team up with a GRU basket. The game remained a one-point affair into the closing minutes until the Cougars had the ball on the sideline with 11 seconds in regulation, trailing GRU by one. Ashby grabbed an offensive rebound for the Jags and was fouled on the play. After Ashby was fouled, the senior was called for a technical for slamming the ball which gave CSU two free throws.
CSU made both and Ashby made one to keep a 62-all game intact to go into overtime. The Cougars went on a 13-0 run in OT to hold off GRU for a 75-62 win. Ashby led all scorers with 22 points for GRU, while Sykes notched 17 overall. GRU shot 37.1 percent for game to CSU's 36.1, but lost a 49-to-40 rebound contest.
