GRU Wins Fourth In A Row With 67-58 Victory Over Clayton State

Box Score

MORROW, Ga. -  The Jaguar men's basketball team forced 16 turnovers and capitalized on those for 20 points to win a 67-58 Peach Belt Conference game over the Clayton State Lakers Saturday night, thanks to Keshun Sherrill's game-high 23 points and Devon Wright-Nelson's 16.

The Jaguars (16-5, 8-4 PBC) were not sure if senior Devon Wright-Nelson would play against the Lakers (14-6, 7-5 PBC), after he injured his hamstring in GRU's victory over UNC Pembroke on Jan. 28.

Wright-Nelson came out a bit stale for the Jags in opening half, tallying five points, but Sherrill picked up a quick 11 in the opening 20 minutes to keep a 27-26 lead at the half.

Kelsey Terry, who paced the Lakers with a team-high 19 points, hit a three pointer to start the game. Sherrill made his first attempt at a jumper, but then GRU went cold for a few minutes as Clayton State took a seven-point advantage.

Kelvin Howard came off the bench and knocked down a timely three pointer to bring the game within four and after a Sherrill's jumper with 8:14 to go in the half; Tamyrik Fields completed the and-1 play to cut the Jags' deficit to one.

A Devonte Thomas layup stole the lead for GRU at 18-17 and the Jags built it up to a six-point advantage, before Kelsey Terry enjoyed a three-point play to bring it within three. Two Saiquan Terry free throws brought the score to25-24 at the half in favor of the Jags.

There were six lead changes and two tied scores in the second half, though the Jags hung on as Wright-Nelson came alive to score 11 second-half points and Sherrill added 12 to will GRU to their fourth-straight win.

GRU was outrebounded 31-30, but scored 20 points off turnovers and made six more free throws than the Lakers in the game. Clayton State posted a 40.8 field-goal percentage to GRU's 40.4, though the Jags shot 85 percent from the charity stripe to the Lakers' 73.3.

Sherrill lead with23 points, four assists, and three steals, Wright-Nelson posted 16 points, six boards, and three steals, and Thomas scored 10 with a steal, assist and two boards.

The Jags continue Peach Belt Conference play on the road with a trip to Georgia College on Wednesday, Feb. 4 to meet the Bobcats at 7:30 p.m. in the Centennial Center in Milledgeville, Ga.
