AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta women's tennis team won a close 5-4 Peach Belt Conference match on Tuesday afternoon over the Clayton State Lakers in Morrow, Ga.
The Jaguars are now 4-1 overall on the new season and 1-1 in Peach Belt play, while Clayton State moved to 3-1 and 0-1 in the PBC.
The Lakers took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with Aida Castany and Maria Nadal combining for the #2 doubles win for GRU. In singles competition, it was Clayton State again who jumped out ahead – winning the #1 and #2 singles matches over Monica Gonzalez and Aida Castany.
Gisela Font won the #3 singles match 7-6, 6-1 to give the Jags their first singles win of the day, before Maria Pimentel, Maria Nadal, and Amelia Pinoargote all won their matches to steal a 5-4 match in favor of the Jags. Pimentel and Nadal each came back from a defecit to keep the Jags' hopes alive.
Women's tennis plays another Peach Belt match at Montevallo this Thursday, Feb. 13 at 1:00 p.m. in Montevallo, Ala.
