Jags Cruise Past Flagler 73-48 For Seventh Straight Win

Box Score

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The GRU Augusta men's basketball team improved its winning streak to seven in a row with a 73-48 Peach Belt victory over Flagler Wednesday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The triumph over Flagler (9-13, 4-11 PBC) resulted in the Jaguars' (19-5, 11-4 PBC) longest series of consecutives in the 2014-15 season, and allowed the squad to maintain a tie with UNC Pembroke for first place in the PBC East Division.

Coming off a tough 79-76 overtime road victory against Armstrong, the Jags put together a strong second half to beat the Saints by 25 points.

In the opening minutes, GRU went on an 8-0 run for the early lead. Then the Saints scored eight unanswered points to tie the contest at 8-all. From that point forward GRU nursed a tight scoring advantage to end the first half with a 28-24 lead.

GRU struggled to find the basket early, shooting 40.7 percent from the field, while Flagler shot 36 percent from the floor, but was 46.2 percent from beyond the arc.

However, five minutes into the second half the Jags' offense caught fire and blew the doors open with 13-4 run for first double-digit lead of the game, 50-37.

At the 5:44 mark, Jags' senior guard Devonte Thomas canned a three-pointer to go up by 22 points, 62-40, and a few possessions later freshman forward Tamyrik Fields brought down a one-handed jam to electrify the crowd.

To finish to evening, the Jags won the rebounding battle 34-26, forced 20 turnovers and had 12 steals. From the field, the Jags shot 49.2 percent, and had a trio of players score in double digits. Thomas and sophomore guard Keshun Sherrill dropped 15, and senior forward Henry McCarthy posted 11 points.

The Jags return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with a rival matchup against USC Aiken in the Convocation Center.
