AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 21 nationally-ranked GRU Augusta men's tennis team matched three wins in singles to the No. 22 Georgia College Bobcats on Wednesday afternoon, but a 2-1 deficit after doubles play gave the Jags a 5-4 loss in the Peach Belt Conference opener.
It was a close battle of nationally-ranked league opponents at Georgia College. The Jaguars (2-1, 0-1 PBC) got a doubles win from duo Moritz Gehlhaus and Thomas Sevel, but the Bobcats (2-0, 1-0 PBC) won 8-3 and 8-2 in the other slots to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
No. 20 Romain Ferreira downed No. 22 Yannick Hass in the #1 singles match 6-2, 6-4. The Jags won twice more in singles behind Romain Brunie and Gehlhaus, but GC matched them with three singles wins to take the day 5-4. Gehlhaus came back from an opening 3-6 first-set loss to win two straight 6-2 sets.
GRU hosts Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, Feb. 6 for their home opener at Newman Tennis Center for a 2:00 p.m. match.
