AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 21 nationally-ranked GRU Augusta Jaguars won an 8-1 match in their 2015 spring opener over the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears Friday afternoon at Newman Tennis Center.
GRU (3-1) won three straight doubles matches to start the day – starting with Thomas Sevel and Moritz Gehlhaus beating Patrick Bauer and Marvin Mueller 8-5, the closest doubles match of the day.
In singles play, the first three matches saw the Jags win the open set, but drop the second. Romain Ferreira (#1 singles), and Gehlhaus (#3) came back and won the third set, but Sevel fell. Joao Gabriel Freitas, Arhtur Andrade and Gabriel Santos were near perfect in the final three singles slots – winning 36 games and only dropping five.
The Jags continue Peach Belt Conference play on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Clayton State.
