Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – The GRU Augusta women's basketball team earned the fourth seed in the Peach Belt Conference East Division and met the first-seeded Columbus State Cougars in the quarterfinals of the PBC Tournament to fall 66-53 in the Frank G. Lumpkin Center.
GRU (9-18, 8-11 PBC) won seven of their last 10 regular-season games to earn the fourth seed in the East Division and book a first-round quarterfinal matchup at first-seeded Columbus State, ranked fifth in the nation.
The Jags end the 2014-15 season with Kayla Roberts leading the Peach Belt with an 84.1 free-throw percentage. Kariel Hutt is fifth with a 49.1 field-goal percentage, second in rebounds (279) and rebounds per game (10.3), ninth in steals (48) and 10th in field-goals made (138). Camille Gee is second in minutes played (968), ninth in the league with a 35.7 three-point percentage and ninth with 97 free throws.
Entering the game averaging a double-double, it was only appropriate for GRU junior Kariel Hutt to carry the team 13 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, while Camille Gee, who entered the game as GRU's leading scorer, paced the team 14 points.
Neither team was impressive shooting from the floor as the Cougars shot 33.8 percent and held the Jags to a 31.6 field-goal percentage. While each team connected on 15 free throws, the difference was in the turnover column as the Jags committed 18 turnovers and the Cougars recorded 12 steals.
GRU went down to the Cougars (28-1, 18-1 PBC) immediately after they opened the game on a 6-0 run. The Jags got on the board when Kelsey Fynaardt hit two straight jumpers for the first points for, but CSU held the lead throughout. With 5:19 to go in the first half, a Kariel Hutt layup cut the Cougar advantage to two – the closest GRU had been since the opening basket.
It didn't last as CSU's Michelle Mitchell got going and ended the day with a game-high 19 points and 16 rebounds. Mitchell and Erin Morrow put CSU back up by seven real quick, after connecting on a jumper and three pointer in the next possessions. Eryn Cochran buried consecutive three pointers and jumper from Morrow with 23 second on the clock, had the Jaguars down 37-21 at the half.
The Jags were one-for-nine on three-point attempts in the second half and couldn't slow down the number five team in the nation, despite making it interesting in the closing minutes.
With 2:21 remaining in the game and after being down by 18 at one point in the game, the Jaguars had themselves a five-point affair after Tavia Sykes hit a jumper.
CSU answered in the next trip down the floor with a jumper and layup. Down by eight under a minute, Head Coach Nate Teymer had to foul and the Cougars ended the game on the free-throw line.
