AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars opened the season on Sunday at home in Newman Tennis Center and won an 8-1 non-conference match over the Benedict College Tigers.
Augusta opened the season with an 8-1 victory, dropping the number one singles match for the only loss of the season-opening day.
Troy University transfer Brooke Durden made the No. 1 singles debut for the Jags. Durden was outlasted 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 to Karla Flores, but the next five wins went to Augusta to win singles play 5-1.
Junior Monica Gonzalez started in the No. 2 singles slot for the Jags, senior Maria Cecilia Pimentel earned No. 3, senior Gisela Font No. 4, senior Maria Nadal No. 5, and sophomore Amelia Pinoargote No. 6.
In doubles competition, Durden and Pimentel teamed together to take down Benedict 8-1 in the first slot. Gonzalez and Pinoargote matched up in No. 2 doubles and won 8-5, before Font and Nadal won 8-0 in the final doubles contest.
The Jags host Coker College for a men's and women's dual match on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 1:0 p.m. at Newman Tennis Center.
