AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ranked No. 41 in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Jaguars faced off against No. 5 Lander for their second league test of the young season and fell 8-1.
Freshman Patrick Oliveira earned the No. 1 singles slot for the match, followed by freshman Joao Ferreira at No. 2, junior Arthur Andrade at No. 3, junior Joao Gabriel Freitas at No. 4, sophomore Thomas Sevel at No. 5, and sophomore Gabriel dos Santos at No. 6.
Augusta came out strong against the powerhouse Bearcats, but Lander still managed to edge out the first two doubles spots in tiebreaks. Oliviera/Freitas and Sevel/Gehlhaus both fell 9-8 to begin in close matches. Lander completed the doubles sweep as Ferreira/dos Santos fell 8-3 at the third doubles spot.
The Jaguars struggled in the singles competition, with Sevel pulling out the only singles win for the Jaguars with his 6-4, 6-3 win.
Oliveira fell 6-1, 3-6, 8-6 in a long, three-set battle; Ferreira fell 6-1, 6-2; Andrade fell 6-3, 6-3; Gabriel Freitas fell 6-4, 6-2; and dos Santos recorded the final loss for the Jaguars after retiring at 4-4 in the first set.
Augusta hosts Montevallo on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Newman Tennis Center for another Peach Belt Conference dual match.
