AUGUSTA, Ga. – Ranked 44th in the nation, the Augusta Jaguars hosted No. 20 North Georgia for a Peach Belt Conference dual match on Tuesday afternoon and the Jaguars pulled off multiple crucial marathon matches in a 5-4 upset of the Nighthawks.
Augusta (7-2, 1-2 PBC) grabbed their first win in the Peach Belt this season with the victory.
The Jags fell into a hole after the doubles competition, going down 2-1. Oliviera/Gabriel Freitas slipped in the No. 1 spot 8-5 and Ferreira/Shamsi fell in the No. 3 spot 8-1. Sevel/Gehlhaus got the Jaguars on the board with a tight 9-8 win in the No. 2 doubles position.
In the singles competition, freshman Patrick Oliveira started in the No. 1 position; freshman Joao Ferreira started in the No. 2 spot; sophomore Moritz Gehlhaus in the No. 3 spot; junior Arthur Andrade in the No. 4 spot; sophomore Thomas Sevel in the No. 5 spot; and junior Joao Gabriel Freitas in the No. 6 spot.
Augusta went to third sets in five of their six singles matches and managed to walk away with wins in all but one of those, speaking to the endurance and heart of this Augusta men's team.
Oliveira took the No. 1 singles spot 3-6, 6-1, 6-1; Ferreira won the No. 2 spot 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Sevel pulled out the No. 5 spot 4-6, 6-4, 6-3; and Gabriel Freitas took the final spot 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 in a dominant third set.
Gehlhaus fell at the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-4 and Andrade fell at 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, but Augusta's strong performances across the board were enough to help them edge out the highly-ranked Nighthawks.
Augusta hosts Georgia College this Friday, March 4 at 12:00 p.m. in Newman Tennis Center.
