AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars women's tennis team hosted their fifth Peach Belt Conference dual match of the season, falling 6-3 in a match that was much closer than initial numbers would indicate.
Augusta (9-2, 3-2 PBC) is ranked 36th in the nation and sixth in the NCAA Southeast Region.
North Georgia came out strong, jumping out 2-1 after a tight doubles competition. Durden/Pimentel fell in the No. 1 spot 8-5 and Gonzalez/Pinoargote fell 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles spot. Font/Nadal pulled out the only doubles win of the day for Augusta with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot.
In singles competition, graduate Brooke Durden started in the No. 1 spot; junior Monica Gonzalez at No. 2; senior Maria Pimentel at No. 3; senior Gisela Font at No. 4; senior Maria Nadal at No. 5; and sophomore Amelia Pinoargote in the final spot.
The Nighthawks won the top three singles slots. Durden fell 6-2, 6-0 at the top; Gonzalez fell 6-2, 6-0 in the second spot; and Pimentel fell 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 after coming out strong in the first set.
Font and Nadal pulled out marathon victories in the No. 4 and 5 spots, with Font winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Nadal winning 6-7, 6-2, and 10-5. Pinoargote fell in the final spot 3-6, 6-4, and 6-0 to round out the 6-3 victory for North Georgia.
Augusta hosts Georgia College this Friday, March 4 at 12:00 p.m. in Newman Tennis Center.
