FLORENCE, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars fought their way to earn the eighth seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and fell to No. 4 and top-seeded Armstrong State 5-0 in the opening quarterfinal match on Friday morning at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
Ranked No. 49 in the nation, the Jaguars (13-10) made their 23rd appearance in the 24-year history of the PBC Tournament.
The match marks the last Peach Belt competition for Jaguar seniors Gisela Font, Maria Nadal, Maria Cecilia Pimentel, and graduate student Brooke Durden.
After rain suspended play for an hour in the middle of singles play, the Pirates picked up two straight set wins to clinch the match. No. 48-ranked Prats-Millan blanked Gisela Font, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, then Stomlega beat Maria Cecilia Pimentel, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to send the Pirates into the semifinals.
For the 13th consecutive year, the Armstrong State Pirates (24-1) entered the tourney as the No. 1 seed. The defending national champions, the Pirates are the 12-time defending tournament champions and are seeking their 22nd tournament title after downing Augusta in the opening round.
Armstrong had five players on first-team All-Conference and two on second-team All-Conference, while Armstrong's Lena Lutzeier was named Player of the Year and Pirate Head Coach Sean McCaffrey the Coach of the Year.
