In the first set, the Hawks dominated play winning by a score of 25-14. With a commanding 10-point lead, Augusta struggled to battle back, only stringing together consecutive points three times in the late half of the set.
The Jags looked to reset in the second, opening up with both squads trading points for the first 10 scores. Tied at 5-5, Augusta managed to pull ahead by the halfway mark to bring the score to 13-9. The Jaguars wouldn't let the lead go for the remainder of the set, and closed it out 25-17.
In the third, the Jags carried their quality play over from the second, winning by a score of 25-10. A mirror image of the second, point trading was commonplace to start, with the score 6-4 after the first 10. Again, the Jags began pulling away as the set progressed, picking up a 10-6 lead before Shorter had to burn a timeout. Augusta would give the Hawks much time to catch their breath, however, as they built up a double-digit lead at 19-9 coming out of the break. Chloe Allen smoked a kill to get to set point, allowing an attack error by Shorter to finish it off on the next play.
In the fourth set, both teams came out the gate strong, continuing the trend from the previous sets. Augusta would break the early deadlock with a 3-0 run to make it 9-6, but the Hawks continued to battle and keep it close. Shorter would gain the lead briefly midway through, but the Jags managed to tie it back up each time. As the set wound down the home team pulled ahead 22-19, forcing Augusta to take a timeout to refocus. The set would end, however, with a Hawk victory of 25-21.
Shorter would carry the momentum of the fourth into the fifth and final set, jumping out to a 7-4 lead before Augusta fought back to tie it. Battling back provided just enough momentum to the Jags to finish out the set with a 15-12 win.
Augusta will head to Carrollton, Ga. for their next contest when they go against West Georgia on Tuesday, Oct 1st at 6:00 p.m.
