AUGUSTA, Ga- The Augusta University women's volleyball team defeated rival USC Aiken 3-1 Friday evening. With the win, Augusta improves to 22-4, 9-1 PBC while USC Aiken falls to 15-8, 3-7 PBC. The win extends AU's win streak to eight. The Jaguars are set for a pivotal conference matchup against Lander at home on Thursday, Nov 9.
Sharon Quarles' squad was paced by Jazmyn Wheeler's 15 kills and 12 digs. Wheeler now leads the PBC with 15 double-doubles this season. Savannah Davis also registered double-digit kills. The junior had 10 kills to go along with three blocks and two service aces. Sophia Kruczko tallied seven kills.
Defensively, Madelyn Eden was a force at the net, rejecting five balls and turning in two solo blocks in the four-set match. Dariana Luna had 16 digs and setter Janvier Buggs had 11 digs. Buggs also led the Jags with 34 assists and 2 service errors.
Kills by Eden and Davis propelled AU to an early 13-8 lead in the first set. The Jags would lead by as many as seven points in the stanza, winning 25-20.
The visiting Pacers battled back in the second set, holding Augusta to an uncharacteristic .146 hitting percentage. After the break between Sets 2 and 3, the home team returned to the court firing on all cylinders, taking a 4-1 lead. Back-to-back kills from Davis and an attack error from Aiken's Sadie McKay helped extend the lead to 13-8. Augusta closed the set on an 8-2, winning 25-15 in the third set before closing the match with a 25-16 score in the fourth and final set.
