AIKEN, SC - The Augusta University softball team defeated the USC Aiken Pacers 8-5 in extra innings on Thursday afternoon. Augusta is now 17-22, 4-17 PBC while the Pacers are now 17-26, 9-12 in conference play.
In the opening stanza,
Grace Bridges singled and stole second to put herself into scoring position. A double from
Bailee Roberts pushed Bridges home for an early 1-0 advantage.
USC Aiken quickly knotted the score off a sac fly to center field.
Both teams remained scoreless until USC Aiken hit a two-run homer in the fourth for a 3-1 advantage.
Augusta made an offensive push of their own in the top pf the fifth inning, carding scores off another Roberts' double and a single from
Sophie Baker that scored
Hayden Pearson and gave AU a 4-3 lead.
USC Aiken tacked on a run in the sixth inning to even the score and push the game to right innings.
Bailee Roberts again answered the call in the extra inning, hitting a single to center field that scored
Lauren Slade and
Shelbie Summerlin. A throwing error by the Pacers' second base added two more scores and secured the victory for Augusta.
Bailee Roberts was 3-for-5 with 5 RBI to pace the Jaguars.
Ansley Gibson and
Lauren Evens both had two hits.
Ansley Gibson started the game pitching for AU.
Ansley Gibson (9-12) secured the win, striking out eight batters while allowing six hits for five runs.
Augusta will host its final home series April 22-23 against Flagler at Jaguar Field.
