ROME, Ga – The Augusta University volleyball team defeated Shorter 3-1 on the road Tuesday evening. Augusta is now 6-3 overall while Shorter moves to 3-5. The Jaguars home opener is Friday Sept 15 at 2pm against Valdosta State as part of the PBC/Gulf South Crossover.
Sophia Kruczko led the offense with 12 kills on 25 swings.
Jazmyn Wheeler matched her with 12 kills. Wheeler was one dig shy of another double-double, carding nine digs to go along with 4 digs and two aces for the night.
Senior
Jada Suguturaga added nine kills on only 18 swings, turning in her highest hitting percentage of the season.
Dariana Luna led the defense with 22 digs.
Rylie Harris was also in double digits with 12 digs. Suguturaga added four blocks to the defensive effort and
Madelyn Eden sent back three shots.
Javier Buggs dished 19 assists while
Abigail Breeden totaled 8 assists.
In the first set, services aces from
Jazmyn Wheeler, Janier Buggs and
Abigail Breeden led Augusta to an early 9-4 lead that was never relinquished.
Set 2 saw Shorter jump out to a big 10-3 lead, but the Jaguars used a 9-1 run to ush the score to narrow the lead to 21-19. Three consecutive kills from Wheeler pushed the score to 23-20 in favor of the home team. Back-to-back kills from
Jordan Jerome tied the game at 24-24, but the Hawks would claim the second set 26-24.
The third set was point-for-point the entire way, but AU used a .227 hitting percentage to claim the set before dominating the fourth and final set 25-13.
