AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University volleyball team posted a pair of victories Saturday on the final day of the PBC-Gulf South Crossover. AU has now won its last eight games and improved to 9-3 for the season. Augusta is set to open Peach Belt Conference play on Friday, Sept. 22 at home against Flagler.
GAME 2 vs Montevallo
Head Coach
Sharon Quarles' squad was led by another double-double performance from
Jazmyn Wheeler. Wheeler registered 11 kills and 17 digs to go along with two aces.
Jada Suguturaga was also in double-figure kills, totaling 10 in the match. Suguturaga and Kruczko led with four blocks each.
Dariana Luna matched Wheeler's 17 digs and Abigail Breenden added 13.
Rylie Harris registered 10 digs.
Janvier Buggs dished out a match-high 18 assists. Breeden had 15.
Augusta took set 1 25-20 before the Falcons battled back for a 25-21 in the second set. With the match tied at one set apiece, Augusta used a .471 hitting percentage in the third to help close the game.
GAME 3 vs Mississippi College
The Jags would go on to win the second game of the day against Mississippi College in dramatic fashion. Down two sets to none, Augusta came rushing back, winning the next three sets 25-13, 25-19, 15-10.
Although the match was virtually even, AU held the edge in digs.
Dariana Luna had a breakout match, collecting a career-high 37 digs against the Choctaw. Her 37 digs are the most of any Peach Belt player this season.
Rylie Harris had an impressive 18 digs,
Janvier Buggs had 13 kills, and
Abigail Breeden had 12 digs. Bugs led AU with 27 assists while Breeden had 18.
Again, Wheeler provided the offensive spark for the home team, adding her second double-double of the day. Her 19 kills and 13 digs was the best by any player in the tournament.
The rest of Augusta's offense was evenly distributed. Suguturaga had 9 kills on 21 swings and
Jordan Jerome turned in a season-high 9 kills as well. Sophia Kruzcko was just behind them with 8 kills while
Madelyn Eden had 5 for the match.
Augusta will open PBC play on Friday, Sept. 22 at home against Flagler before returning Saturday to play Flagler again at home. Live stats and video will be available at augustajags.com.
