DAYTONA BEACH, FL. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team swept non-conference opponent Drury to open the 2023 season on Friday morning with scores of 26-24, 25-18, and 25-13 before falling 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 22-25 to host Embry Riddle.
GAME 1 vs Drury
AU was dominant throughout the match, holding Drury to a .040 hitting percentage. Reigning PBC Player of the Year Jazmine Wheeler and sophomore
Kayli Cleaver each tallied 13 kills in the game. Wheeler was just shy of a double-double, turning in 9 digs to go along with an impressive .500 hitting percentage for the match. Cleaver blasted 13 kills in only 24 attempts while adding 4 blocks on the defensive end.
Newcomer
Mikayla Kline led the back row with 15 digs. Kline, along with setter
Abigail Breeden each had 4 service aces. Veteran libero
Dariana Luna had 13 digs in the match.
Dawning the Augusta jersey for the first, setter
Janvier Buggs dished 20 assists while Breeden had 10.
Drury was led by Juliana Squire's 8 kills.
GAME 2 vs Embry-Riddle
While Wheeler's standout 25 kill and 10 dig double-double was a highlight for AU, the offense struggled to find its footing. Kline notched 9 kills while Cleaver tallied 8 for the match.
Defensively, Luna had 16 digs while Breeden carded 13.
Buggs led with 23 assists while Breeden dished 19, collecting her first double-double of the season.
Augusta returns to play Saturday, Sept 2 on the second day of the Bahama House Labor Day Classic with two highly-anticipated matches against regional foes Wingate and Emmanuel.
