Jaguar Volleyball Wraps Opening Weekend Play in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, FL. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team wrapped play at the Bahama House Labor Day Classic Saturday evening. After dropping a five-set battle to #20 Wingate, Augusta would go on to fall in a non-conference game to the Emmanuel Lions.

GAME 3 vs Wingate

The first game of the day was the most highly-anticipated game of the tournament, as Wingate and Augusta were both picked to win their conferences in the preseason poll.

The match met expectations, going the full five sets in the battle of top-ranked teams. After winning the first two sets, AU would fall 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 15-11.
The match featured 30 tied scores and 9 lead changes.

In a similar fashion to the first two games, Jazyn Wheeler anchored both the offense and defense, blasting 23 kills and collecting 22 digs.  Kayli Cleaver and Sophia Kruczko had double-digit kills, tallying 14 and 10, respectively.

Defensively, Jada Suguturaga led the blocking effort, denying six balls. Libero Dariana Luna totaled 18 digs. Setter Janvier Buggs had another double-double, dishing 27 assists and 14 digs.

#20 Wingate remained the only unbeaten team in the tournament.

GAME 4 vs Emmanuel

Wheeler had 9 kills and senior Jordan Jerome had 7, but it wasn't enough to stifle the offense of Emmanuel on the final day of the Bahama House Labor Day Classic.

Buggs added 13 assists and Abigail Breeden added 8 assists to the offense. Senior Luna dug up 13 balls while Mikayla Kline and Buggs each added a service ace.

Errors plagued Augusta as Emmanuel jumped out to a 25-22 score in the first set. The Lions turned in a .214 hitting percentage in the second set and a .244 hitting percentage in the third and final set to push to victory.
