AUGUSTA, GA – The Augusta University volleyball team (19-6, 4-4 PBC) opened the Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a commanding 3-0 victory over Georgia College (8-21, 0-8 PBC) on Tuesday evening. The Jaguars took the match with set scores of 25-7, 25-20, and 25-10.
Before the match, senior setter Janvier Buggs was honored for reaching the 2,000-assist milestone in her collegiate career.
Match Highlights:
- Layne Witherspoon led the offense with 11 kills on a .273 hitting percentage, while also adding 2 service aces and 1 block assist for a team-high 13.5 points.
- Sophia Kruczko was a force at the net, hitting .529 with 9 kills and 2 block assists, contributing 10 points.
- Marin Freeland added 6 kills and 3 block assists, while Madelyn Eden provided 4 kills and 6 block assists
- Buggs directed the attack with 20 assists and chipped in with 5 digs and 1 service ace. Marah Zenner added 8 assists and 5 digs.
- Defensively, Rylie Harris recorded 11 digs and served 3 ace.
The Jaguars held Georgia College to a negative hitting percentage (-.063) while hitting .260 as a team. Augusta's dominant net defense tallied 20 blocks, shutting down Georgia College's attack.
Next Match: Augusta travels to Greenwood, SC, on Friday, November 22, to face No. 1 seed Lander University in the Peach Belt Conference Semifinals. The match is set for 4:30 p.m. If the Jaguars advance, they will compete in the championship match on Saturday, November 23, at 2 p.m.
