GREENWOOD, SC – The Augusta University volleyball team (20-6, 4-4 PBC) earned a thrilling five-set victory over No. 1 seed Lander University (20-5, 7-1 PBC) in the Peach Belt Conference Semifinals on Friday at Horne Arena. The Jaguars took the match with set scores of 22-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, and 15-12 to secure their spot in the championship match.
Match Recap:
After falling behind two sets, Augusta rallied. In the third set, Madelyn Eden and Jada Suguturaga combined for critical blocks to edge Lander 25-22. The fourth set mirrored this intensity, with key kills from Layne Witherspoon and Sophia Kruczko forcing a decisive fifth set.
The Jaguars seized control in the final set, with Suguturaga delivering 13 kills on a .220 hitting percentage and Eden contributing 14 kills and 7 block assists. Marin Freeland's late-game defensive efforts and a timely kill from Witherspoon clinched the 15-12 victory.
Individual Highlights:
• Madelyn Eden led all players with 14 kills, 7 block assists, and 20.5 points.
• Jada Suguturaga recorded 13 kills, 6 block assists, and 18 points.
• Marah Zenner dished out 37 assists and added 16 digs.
• Rylie Harris anchored the defense with a match-high 28 digs.
• Layne Witherspoon contributed 11 kills and 3 block assists.
Next Match: The Jaguars will face Flagler College on Saturday, November 23, at 1 p.m. in the Peach Belt Conference Championship as they pursue their sixth tournament title in seven years and their second consecutive championship.
