AUGUSTA, GA – The Augusta University baseball team exploded for 26 runs in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Fairmont State on Saturday. Augusta improves to 8-7 overall with the win. After a midweek trip to West Georgia on Feb. 27, AU will open Peach Belt Conference Play when they host Georgia College March 1-3 at Jaguar Field.
In the first game of the day, four different Augusta pitchers combined to throw a total shutout.
Will Cantrell,
Josh Green,
Grant Jones, and
Blythe Keisler each saw time on the mound.
After using two errors to score two runs in the first, AU scored 16 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the second inning. The Jags added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after a double from
Kyle Lodise and a single from
Koby Ayala. Both scored one run.
A grand slam from
Zach Kwiatkowski scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The final two runs came in the seventh inning.
Augusta piled up 17 hits in the game.
Brady Loughren and Kwiatkowski both drove in four runs. Seven AU players collected multiple hits.
In the second game of the day, Fairmont State got on the board first in the third inning, scoring three runs. Augusta promptly answered, helped by a triple from
Parker Ingram in the bottom of the same inning that pushed the score to 5-3. With Loughren at bat, AU managed to tack on one more run.
Parker Ingram hit his fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning before
Jordan Wilkie hit his first home of the season in the sixth inning for the final Jaguar score of the game.
Gavin Zoeller (1-0) got the start on the bump. He tossed 2.2 innings, allowing three hits for four runs while striking out two.
Aedan Cates,
Brandon Byler, and
Brayden Howigren all saw time pitching in relief.
Ingram paced Augusta, going 2-for-3 with 2 runs and 4 RBI.
