MONTEVALLO, AL. – The No. 22 Augusta University Jaguars suffered their first loss of the season, falling to tournament host University of Montevallo 3-1 on Friday evening at the Central State Bank Arena.
Despite the setback, it was a breakout game for
Layne Witherspoon, who led Augusta with a match-high 19 kills while hitting an impressive .486.
Jada Suguturaga also made significant contributions with 10 kills and 6 blocks, while
Marin Freeland added 8 kills.
Janvier Buggs facilitated the offense with 23 assists, and
Giulia Rodrigues contributed defensively with 21 digs.
Montevallo claimed the first set 25-20, but Augusta rallied in the second set, only to narrowly fall 26-24. The Jaguars showed resilience, winning a tightly contested third set 27-25, but the Falcons ultimately sealed the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Overall, Augusta hit .145 for the match with 53 kills and 30 errors on 159 total attacks, while Montevallo posted a .222 hitting percentage with 57 kills and 23 errors on 153 attacks. The Falcons recorded 12 blocks compared to Augusta's 18.
