Augusta, Ga. - The Augusta women fell 59-54 to Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars are now 1-1 in Peach Belt Conference play and 4-2 overall. The Hurricanes improve to 2-0 in conference, 6-2 overall.
The game was tight throughout with neither team really able to separate themselves from each other. The Hurricanes used a 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to surge to a 55-49 lead.
Quinasia Abercrombie would hit a pair of free throws with just under two minutes left ot make it a three point game. After another free throw by
Sierra Burns and two more by Abercrombie with :47 left to play, it would be a one point Georgia Southwestern lead. The Canes would then get a big offensive rebound and put-back basket to give them a three point lead with :14 left in the game. They would add two more free throws for the final score.
Augusta shot just 29.6% from the field while Georgia Southwestern shot 54%. The Jaguars were also out rebounded 38-26. Augusta did hit 76% of their free throws but it was not enough.
Elyse Autrey led Augusta with 14 points with Abercrombie adding 13 points and a game high seven rebounds.
Chloe Ross and
Sa'Niah Dorsey each scored seven.
The Jaguars will next be in action Wednesday, Dec. 10 when they travel to USC Beaufort.
