BELMONT, N.C. – The Augusta Jaguars put together a strong performance on the road Tuesday, defeating Belmont Abbey 8-5 in game one and dominating game two with an 11-1 victory in five innings. The wins improve Augusta's record to 14-11 on the season.
Game 1: Augusta 8, Belmont Abbey 5
After a scoreless first inning, Augusta exploded for five runs in the second. Cadance Winder and Kelsea Moody recorded back-to-back singles before Payton Terrell drove in the game's first run with an RBI double. Kaylynn Scaffe then executed a squeeze bunt to bring home Moody, while Chesney Miles and Bailee Roberts each added RBI hits to give Augusta a 5-0 lead.
Belmont Abbey responded with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-5. However, Augusta put the game away in the sixth when Bobbi Poff delivered an RBI single, and Roberts followed with a run-scoring hit to extend the lead to 8-5.
Hannah Turner (5-4) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings while allowing three runs on six hits. Ansley Gibson started the game, striking out four and allowing two runs in 3.1 innings. Roberts led the Jaguars at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Game 2: Augusta 11, Belmont Abbey 1 (5 innings)
The Jaguars carried their momentum into game two, scoring four runs in the first inning. Ayellad Howard walked and later scored on a single by Gibson. Moody then drove in two more runs with a base hit, and Kaylynn Scaffe added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
Augusta kept the offense rolling, adding one run in the third, three in the fourth, and three more in the fifth. Poff doubled in two runs in the final inning, while Sam Tener capped off the scoring with an RBI single.
Madalyn Spinks (3-2) dominated in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Gibson and Moody each recorded two RBIs, while Winder, Poff, and Scaffe also contributed run-scoring hits.
