AIKEN, S.C. – Augusta University softball earned a split on Saturday in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at rival USC Aiken. The Jaguars took game one 2-1 before falling 6-5 in game two at J.H. Satcher Field. Augusta moves to 23-23 overall and 5-13 in conference play.
Game 1: Augusta 2, USC Aiken 1
Madalyn Spinks allowed just one earned run over seven innings while scattering seven hits. She struck out two and walked three to improve to 7-7 on the season.
The Jaguars tied the game in the third on an RBI single from Bailee Roberts. In the seventh, Ryan Hanson doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kaylynn Scaffe. Kelsea Moody followed with an infield single before Sam Tener drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice.
Ayellad Howard finished 2-for-4, while Scaffe and Hanson each added doubles. Augusta did not commit an error and turned a double play in the fifth.
Game 2: USC Aiken 6, Augusta 5
Augusta outhit USC Aiken 13-11 in game two but could not overcome a four-run fourth inning by the Pacers. Howard went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple. Grace Bailey went 3-for-4 with an RBI double, and Chesney Miles recorded two hits and scored twice.
The Jaguars opened the game with two runs in the first on RBI hits from Cadance Winder and Bailey. Howard added an RBI triple in the fourth, and Augusta plated two more runs in the sixth on singles from Scaffe and Miles, an RBI hit from Howard, and a groundout RBI from Roberts.
Peyton Terrell started in the circle and went 3.2 innings. Ansley Gibson entered in relief and finished the final 2.1. Augusta again played clean defensively, committing no errors in either contest.
