Augusta, Ga. - After their first spring tournament of the year was canceled due to weather, the Augusta University men's golf team will be part of the field at the Gulf Coast Collegiate, hosted by the University of New Orleans and English Turn Golf and Country Club. The 15 team event will be contested Feb. 23-24 with 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes being played on Tuesday.
While the Jaguars haven't played in a tournament since the fall, coach Steven Paine is confident his guys will be more than ready when they tee it up in the Big Easy. One key, just playing relaxed.
"We just need to play loose," said Paine. "I think at times we go to tournaments and get a little uptight. Sometimes certain fields with some big name schools can get you a little uptight. But I think this is a good opportunity for us. If we play loose and free, no reason we won't play well."Â
Daen Wilken will be part of the starting five for Augusta. Wilken finished fifth in the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate a few weeks ago. Having him in the lineup could be a big boost for the Jags.Â
"I think for him, it was a good validation for him to get a good result at the Sharkey and beat a lot of good players," said Paine.
The Gulf Coast Collegiate field consists Augusta University, Belmont, Tennessee Technology, University of New Orleans, Murray State, Loyola University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Nichols State, University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff, St. John's, Central Arkansas, Bellermine, Southern Indiana, Eastern Illinois and Jackson State.
