Augusta Men’s Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision to Division I The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Augusta University men's tennis team came up just short Monday afternoon, falling 4-3 to Division I The Citadel in a tightly contested match.

The Jaguars (2-4) opened strong by sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the opening point. Alejandro Carbonell and Humberto Pinto earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while David Perret and Arthur Valette matched that score at No. 2. Alexis Bailhache and Tommy Matsumine completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Augusta picked up two wins but could not reach the fourth point needed for the team victory. Perret delivered a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, defeating Noah Van Dyke 6-3, 6-4. Bailhache added a three-set victory at No. 3, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

The Citadel secured the match with wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. Valette pushed his opponent to three sets at No. 2 before falling 1-6, 6-3, 2-6. Pinto also forced a third set at No. 4 but was edged 6-4, 3-6, 4-6. Matsumine and Enzo Sakiyama dropped straight-set decisions at No. 5 and No. 6.

Augusta moves to 2-4 on the season after the narrow loss to the Division I Bulldogs.

Next up: The Jaguars travel to Francis Marion on Saturday, Feb. 28. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
