Jaguars Walk Off Georgia Southwestern in Series Opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Augusta University softball team opened its Peach Belt Conference series with a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Friday evening at Jaguar Field. Augusta improved to 11-9 and 4-0 in conference on the season, while the Hurricanes fell to 9-12.

Georgia Southwestern struck first in the fourth inning when Kendall Huelsman doubled down the left field line to score Madison Banks and give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.

Augusta responded in the bottom half of the inning. Eden Parker singled and later scored when Payton Terrell reached on an outfield error, allowing Ayellad Howard, who ran for Parker, to cross the plate and tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams created scoring chances over the next two innings, but Jaguar's pitcher, Ansley Gibson, worked out of multiple jams in the circle. Gibson allowed six hits and one run while walking four and keeping the Hurricanes off the board the rest of the way.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning when Sydney Gilbert doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Terrell, Gilbert scored the winning run on a wild pitch to give the Jaguars the 2-1 walk-off win.

Ansley Gibson earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
