SALISBURY, N.C. – Augusta University softball fell in both games of a doubleheader at Catawba Thursday afternoon in Salisbury, N.C., dropping game one 5-0 before falling 4-3 in a tight game two. The Jaguars come to 12-12 on the season.
Game One
Augusta kept it competitive through the early innings before Catawba pulled away with three runs in the fourth. The Indians capitalized on Augusta errors in the fourth, scoring three unearned runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Alexis Monroe to make it 3-0. Catawba added two more in the sixth to secure the shutout.
Sam Tener led the Jags offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double. Madalyn Spinks worked 3.2 innings in the circle before giving way to Ansley Gibson, who logged 2.1 innings of relief and struck out three.
Game Two
Augusta battled back late with two home runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3, but Catawba answered with a walk-off run in the bottom of the inning to claim a 4-3 win. The Jags finished with six hits and nearly pulled off a late comeback.
Augusta showed life in the third inning when Nevaeh Ross scored on a wild pitch after doubling to open the frame. The Jaguars trailed 3-1 heading into the seventh before Ross and Kaylynn Scaffe hit back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game at 3-3. Catawba answered with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the inning to take the 4-3 decision.
Ross was Augusta's standout performer, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, an RBI, and a stolen base. Ayellad Howard added two hits, including a double. Kristyn Ezzo turned in a quality start, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings while striking out four. Eden Parker followed with a scoreless sixth before Payton Terrell took the loss in the seventh.
