AUGUSTA, Ga. — Augusta University fell in both games of a nonconference doubleheader against Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field, dropping the opener 6-1 before falling 4-1 in the nightcap. The Jaguars move to 7-9 on the season while Wingate improves to 13-7.
Game 1: Wingate 6, Augusta 1
Wingate struck first in the second inning when Lily Huneycutt connected for a solo home run to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The visitors added to their advantage in the fourth inning, scoring three runs behind several hits to extend the lead to 4-0. Wingate later pushed across two insurance runs in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Riley Griffin.
Augusta scored its lone run in the sixth inning.
Nevaeh Ross singled and advanced into scoring position before
Ansley Gibson drove her in to trim the deficit to 4-1.
Ross led Augusta with a 2-for-2 performance that included a double and a stolen base, while
Grace Bailey added two hits as the Jaguars finished with four hits in the contest.
Ansley Gibson took the loss after allowing four runs in 3.2 innings.
Madalyn Spinks worked the final 3.1 innings in relief and struck out four.
Game 2: Wingate 4, Augusta 1
The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead in game two.
Sam Tener singled to open the bottom of the first and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Payton Terrell to give Augusta a 1-0 advantage.
Wingate responded in the second inning with three runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Riley Griffin, to move in front 3-1. The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
Tener and
Ayellad Howard each recorded hits for Augusta as the Jaguars finished with two hits in the game.
Kristyn Ezzo took the loss after allowing four runs over five innings while striking out six.
Payton Terrell provided two scoreless innings of relief as Augusta held Wingate off the scoreboard over the final two frames.
Wingate showcased its depth throughout the doubleheader, utilizing 21 of its 25 players across the two games.
