Augusta, Ga. - In one of the wilder games of the season, Augusta erased an early 7-0 deficit but fell to Lander 9-8 as the Bearcats scored in the top of the ninth for the win. The Jaguars are now 12-9 overall and 8-3 in the Peach Belt Conference. The Bearcats improve to 13-8 overall and 7-4 in conference action.
Lander plated seven runs in the first two innings, but Augusta would fight back. In the fifth inning, with
Nolan Turner on base,
Roland Chance would hit a pinch hit two-run homer to cut the deficit to five.
An inning later would prove to be a big one for the Jags.
Nathan Martin would deliver a RBI single that scored
Ty McClintock. With the bases loaded,
Aidan Cannaday would ground out that plated
Mattheson Go. Then, with two outs,
Kent Moon cracked a three-run home run that tied the game at seven.Â
Lander would retake the lead in the top of the eighth only to see AU again respond. Cannada would deliver a RBI double to knot the score at eight.Â
But in the ninth, the Bearcats would get a RBI double plating the eventual game winning run.Â
The unsung hero for Augusta in this one would be reliever
Jameson Whittier. Whittier came on in relief in the first inning and go 6.2 innings allowing just two runs on five hits with a strikeout, giving AU a chance to respond at the plate.
Turner ended up with three hits and Go had two hits with six other Jaguars collecting a hit apiece.Â
Augusta and Lander will wrap up the series at noon on Sunday. The game has been moved up an hour with the threat of rain in the forecast.
