CLINTON, Miss. – Augusta University volleyball dropped a pair of matches Friday at the PBC/Gulf South Crossover, falling in five sets to Montevallo before a 3-1 loss to unbeaten Alabama Huntsville. The Jaguars moved to 2-8 on the season.
Augusta 2, Montevallo 3
Augusta battled Montevallo through five sets before falling 29-27, 12-25, 22-25, 25-14, 11-15.
Nikol Antova led Augusta with 12 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Layne Witherspoon added nine kills on .273 hitting, while Essence Jones and Emma Haren each finished with nine kills. Haren also collected a team-high 17 digs, and Sofiia Snitsarevych recorded eight kills, three aces and two solo blocks.
The opening set featured 15 ties and nine lead changes before Augusta pulled out the 29-27 win. After Montevallo took the next two sets, the Jaguars responded with their strongest offensive frame of the match in the fourth. Augusta hit .378 with 16 kills and just two errors to roll to a 25-14 win and force a fifth.
Montevallo took control early in the deciding set and closed out the match 15-11.
Augusta 1, UAH 3
Augusta returned to the court against undefeated UAH, falling 19-25, 25-23, 14-25, 17-25.
Antova turned in another strong offensive performance with 16 kills on .275 hitting and seven digs. Witherspoon finished with nine kills on .316 hitting, while Essence Jones added nine kills.
Moni Anjous led the defense with 23 digs. Andrea Rodríguez finished with 21 assists and 10 digs, while Hunter MacFarland added 13 digs.
After dropping the opening set, Augusta fought through a second frame that included 15 ties and nine lead changes. The Jaguars came away with the 25-23 win to even the match. UAH answered by hitting .257 in each of the final two sets to secure the 3-1 victory.
