WINGATE, N.C. --
Tusculum pulled away in the second half for an 83-76 victory over
Augusta State Friday night on the first day of the OrthoCarolina
Classic in Cuddy Arena on the campus of Wingate University.
Junior forward Nicole Mealing paced the Lady Jaguars (1-1) with 21
points and booked 12 rebounds for her second double-double in as
many games. Fellow junior Jasmine Godwin notched 12 points and six
rebounds off the bench.
The two teams combined for 96 free throws, 72 fouls and 57
turnovers. Eight players fouled out in the game, including five
Lady Jags.
Jasmine Gunn poured in a game-high 32 points for 16th-ranked
Tusculum, connecting on 22-of-26 free-throw attempts. Shantae Shank
and Kat Spears added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
After a tightly-contested first half that included seven ties and
seven lead changes, the Lady Pioneers (4-1) used a second-half
surge to pull away. Tusculum led by as many as 16 with 5:32 to play
and outscored ASU 44-28 in the paint.
The Lady Jags owned the rebounding edge 51-39 and got 31 points off
the bench.
