Augusta, Ga. - Student-athletes from both the Augusta women's basketball team and softball team volunteered during the ninth annual Tunnel to Tower 5K and walk event held on the Augusta University Summerville Campus.
The Jaguar players not only served as course marshals at key locations of the event, but also in other roles at the event that honors those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Tunnel to Tower run and walk is to honor the life and death of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001 after running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers with his firefighting gear on.
The event is held to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, but also to raise money for the foundation that assists Gold Star families to build mortgage free homes. Augusta athletes were more than willing to volunteer as a way to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but also to honor Augusta first responders who continue to put their lives on the line every day.
