NEWBERRY, S.C. --
Augusta State fell to Newberry 75-54 in a non-conference road
matchup Wednesday night at Eleazer Arena. With the win, the Lady
Indians improve to 5-2 with their third straight win while ASU
dropped to 1-3.
ASU jumped out in front early with its up-tempo style, scoring the
first seven points of the game. Newbery answered with a 12-5 run to
pull even before the Lady Jaguars responded with six straight of
their own.
ASU maintained its lead until the hosts stormed back with a 16-3
run over the last seven minutes to take a 36-29 halftime lead. The
Lady Jags pulled within four on two occasions early in the second
half before Newberry seized control, using a 20-7 spurt to open up
a 17-point lead with less than five minutes remaining.
Junior guard/forward Nicole Mealing led ASU with 13 points, while
senior forward Tracey Paschal added 12 points and had four steals.
Junior forward Porsha White notched 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting
and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Newberry's Helen McKinney enjoyed a career night with a
double-double, garnering team highs in points (25) and rebounds
(14). Anita Bulcher added 14 points and tallied eight rebounds,
while Janine Ward netted 13 points.
The Lady Jags shot 31.7 percent from the field (19-of-60) and had a
season-low 11 turnovers. Newberry shot 40.8 percent from the field
and won the rebounding battle 50-35.
ASU returns to action on Saturday Dec. 6, taking on Paine in Carter
Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
